2009 Battle For The Rankings Recap II

Jelani Hewitt – 6’2 Sr. Combo Guard – Northeast: Hewitt is a skilled, big time scoring guard. He has a quick release, and loves to shoot 3’s off a high ball screen when a defender goes underneath. He is a very aggressive scoring guard, and can score points in a flurry. While he is more of two guard then a point, he does have the handle and basketball “IQ” to run a team. Look for Hewitt to be one of the state’s leading scorers this season.

Daniel “TJ” Sapp – 6’3 Jr. Guard – Northeast: “TJ” is another high scoring guard from Northeast High School. Sapp is a strong, confident and athletic player. With an unusual shooting release, he has mixed results from the perimeter, but can catch fire at any moment. Sapp’s strength is his ability to score and his athleticism to get to the rim. With his strength and athleticism, he has the potential to become a lock down defender.

Adonis Burbage – 6’5 Jr. Wing – Orlando Christian Prep: Adonis is a wiry, bouncy wing who runs the floor well in transition. Because of his length and athleticism, he has a good ability to get to the rack and finish. He is more of a consistent mid-range shooter than three point shooter, but as his game develops, so will his perimeter shot. He forced some shots that he would have been better off creating for his teammates, but we don’t expect to see that during the season with his high school team.

Demetrius Henry – 6’8 Soph. Post – Northeast: Henry is a long and talented post player. He has great form on his 15ft jump shot, and we even saw him knock in a three over the course of the camp. Demetrius has a wiry frame, but it seems like he will have no problem adding weight. As his post game continues to develop, he has a chance to become one of the state’s top big men in the 2012 class.

Dennis Mavin – 6’2 Sr. Combo Guard – The Rock: Mavin has a very tight and quick handle that he uses with his explosive first step to get into the lane and finish. He is excellent at finishing in transition with floaters and getting to the cup. He can knock down the trey ball, but is more of a streaky shooter than consistent shooter at this stage of his career. Dennis is a tough guard with great one on one skills, and has the ability to create for his teammates.

Ralph Williams – 5’10 Sr. Point Guard – Rockledge: Ralph is a quick and heady point guard who thrives in transition. He finishes well at the rim and is great at getting into the lane and dumping it down to the big man or kicking out for a three. He scores the ball well, makes good decisions with the basketball, and has the ability to be a lock down defender when he wants to.

John Brown – 6’6 Sr. Post – Arlington Country Day: John Brown is a BEAST. He is a relentless rebounder and plays with a ton of heart and energy. Brown cleans up on the offensive glass scoring off put backs and tip-ins. John is a hard nosed player who doesn’t back down from bigger post players. John Brown is one of the most underrated players in the state.

Kishawn Williams – 6’6 Soph. Combo Forward – Godby: Williams is a highly intriguing prospect in the class of 2012. He has a good looking stroke and some wing skills to go along with it. He doesn’t have the skills to play permanently on the perimeter yet, but as his game matures he could be come a big wing. Williams is athletic and talented enough to become a high major prospect if his game continues to develop.

Avery Moore – 5’11 Sr. Combo Guard – Rickards: Avery is a score first, pass second guard with the ability to hit big shots. He has great lift on his shot, and has a good chance of going in every time he releases it. Moore’s shot selection is very questionable at times, as he often settles for the three when he could uses his quickness to get into the paint and create for his teammates. He plays with a ton of passion, and has the ability to be a tenacious defender and explosive scorer.

Nick Wiggins – 6’4 Sr. Wing – Godby: Wiggins was a big time surprise at the camp. Although he is a fifth year senior, he has mid-major prospect written all over him. He is long and athletic and attacks the basket with authority. He showed the ability to knock down a few threes, but his bread and butter was slashing to the paint.

Franklin Agholor – 6’0 Sr. Point Guard – Oldsmar Christian: Agholor is a pass first, traditional point guard. He has a very quick first step, which he uses to get into the paint to finish over bigger defenders and kick out for threes. He picked up man to man full court and caused havoc on defense. He is a long and athletic point guard that runs the team very well and makes players around him better. He showed great basketball “IQ” with back door cuts, and communicating on the floor.

Ugo Okam – 6’11 Sr. Post – Montverde Academy: Maybe the most improved player in the state, Ugo looked great this past weekend at the Battle for the Rankings Camp. Ugo blocked shots, rebounded the ball, and ran the floor for dunks. He played strong and confident throughout camp and scored off put backs and dunks. His defense and shot blocking ability is still further along than his offense, but he has a chance to blossom in the future.

Andre Smith – 5’9 Jr. Point Guard – Blake: Andre is one of the top point guards in the class of 2011 for the state of Florida. He has a great basketball “IQ”. Andre is a very complete point guard. He can knock down shots from the perimeter, has a great midrange game and finishes well at the rim. Smith is also great at getting his teammates involved and creating for them by getting the ball to them in the right place at the right time. He has the ability to knock down big shots, and make big plays. He needs to be a consistent lock down defender, but that will come with maturity.

It looks like william t. Dwyer is going to be the team to beat this year. Victor adams and darnell mclean transfered back to dwyer. From what we have heard they have a 8 man rotation. Jocobey brisset, greg louis, terrel harris, derrick davis, joel james, darnell mclean, victor adams, and montell williams. They have a good chance of returning back to the state tournament, we have also been noted that cody fobbs have returned back to palm beach lakes know one really doesn’t know the reason why. Last year he sat out the entire season bexause of grades, every one was hyped up to see the kid play he was currently ranked the # 16 player in the class of 2011 according to breakdown and florida hoops. Well let’s just see what’s going to happen this year.
