Shawn Smith, 6’3 Combo Guard, Heart & Hustle – Smith had a breakout tournament in Orlando, establishing himself as a high major player leading Heart & Hustle to the 16U AAU State championship. Shawn showed off his athleticism by catching lobs, and throwing down breakaway dunks. He also displayed his skill level, by using his triple threat moves to score midrange buckets all tournament long. Smith played very unselfishly, creating shots for teammates and turning down open shots to make the extra pass. Shawn is a complete guard that will capture the eyes and offers of high major coaches this July.
Carlos Morris, 6’5 SG, Heart & Hustle – Carlos showed his ability to stroke the long ball every game. He knocked down triples off screens, off the dribble and off the catch. He has great size for a shooting guard, and made some tough midrange shots and finishes around the basket. He showed a good handle and an ability to become a player who can break his defender down off the dribble and become a player maker.
John Wade, 6’4 WG, Florida Elite – Wade was the best player for the Florida Elite 16U team this tournament. He is a slashing guard, who made some athletic finishes around the rim. He knocked down some midrange jumpers, but we did not see him hit any three’s. He did a good job playing aggressively offensively and getting to the free throw line. John needs to develop a better perimeter shot for his college recruitment to expand.
Brian Pegg, 6’6 SG, SEBA Select – Pegg is a tall, skilled shooting guard with a high basketball IQ. He knocked down deep three’s off the catch, dribble, and screens. While he is not a great athlete, he had a few breakaway dunks in the tournament. With defenders over playing his ability to hit perimeter shots, he used his craftiness to hit floaters, runners and get to the rim, where he finished or dropped off assists. He did a good job of using a cushion, and his length, to stay in front of smaller, quicker guards.
Brandon Channer, 6’3 PG, SEBA Select – Brandon was hands down the strongest guard in the event. He used his strength to bully smaller guards and even bigger forwards around to finish around the basket. Channer showed a tight handle when being pressured full court and breaking down defenders in the half court. He used the combination of his size, strength, and handle to get into the paint with ease, where he scored off runners or floaters and created for his teammates. Brandon has great hands, which he used to strip guards when they attempted to get to the rim on a fast break. He showed a consistent shooting ability from the three point line off the catch, but settled for too many threes off the dribble, which hurt his overall three point percentage.
Nelson Agholor, 6’1 PG, SEBA Select – Nelson is an extremely vocal, and heady point guard, but his best quality is his toughness and desire to win. He is a lock down defender, and will do whatever he can to help his team win the game. Agholor is a very strong and athletic guard, and used his tools to get to the rim and score and create for others. He knocked down some open jumpers, but didn’t attempt contested shots. He posted up smaller guards, and had some athletic dunks in transition. If Nelson develops a quicker release and some consistency on his shot, he will turn some heads on the circuit in July.
