2010 Breakdown Battle For The Rankings Recap Vol. 1

2011 – Herbert Graham, 6’4 Guard, Parkway Academy: Graham is an athletic two guard that plays extremely hard. Hebert knocked down numerous shots from behind the arc that were set up by teammates this weekend. Graham also did a good job of turning down the three when the defender closed out hot, to get to the cup and make athletic finishes. Graham needs to add a tighter handle to breakdown his defender off the dribble.

2012 – Demetrius Henry, 6’8 Forward, Northeast High: Henry is relentless on the boards, working for every rebound and even chasing down rebounds out of area. Every time a shot goes up, Demetrius always finds a spot under the rim, getting spectacular positioning, and snatching an ample amount of offensive and defensive rebounds. Henry runs the floor very well for his size, putting himself in position for tip ins and rim rocking tip dunks. His post moves at this point are very efficient against defenders his size, but defenders any taller than 6’8, he struggles. Demetrius has the ability to hit the open three, but finds himself settling for jump shots often when he has the size and strength to muscle his way to the rim. Henry is a very promising prospect for the junior class and is certainly a top forward in his class, not only state wide, but also nationally.

2011 – Tim Dixon, 6’10 Forward, Oldsmar Christian: Tim did an outstanding job rebounding the ball in and out of area on Saturday. Dixon is a long player, and used his length to block and altar shots that came into the paint. Tim’s defense at this point is ahead of his offense, but he showed flashes of offensive aggressiveness with a few jumpers and nice tip dunks. Tim shoots extremely well for his size, out to about 18 feet, but needs to do a better job of banging in the post, making his inside presence known. With the addition of weight, strength, and offensive ability, Dixon will certainly be a force to be reckoned with as his career progresses.

2011 – Andre Smith, 5’9 Point Guard, Blake High: Smith did compete at a very high level this weekend, with head to head matchups against Angel Rodriquez and Daniel Sapp. Smith is a steal for Winthrop, and showed the ability to run a team and get his teammates involved when he chooses. Andre is a very scrappy defender, using his height to his advantage and picking up bigger guards full court. Smith showed his ability to hit deep three’s, and he made his defender pay every time he went under the ball screen. Although he is a good shooter, Smith settled for too many three’s off the dribble, and should have used his strength, quickness, and ball handling ability to get into the paint and create for his teammates. Andre has the basketball IQ to run a team in the half court, and the speed and quickness to be an effective up-tempo point guard in transition as well.

2011 – AJ Astroth, 6’6 Wing, Wharton High: AJ is normally an excellent shooter from the three, but struggled this weekend from behind the arc. Instead of settling for three’s, Astroth used his size and shot fake to knock down one dribble pull-ups and get to the rim. AJ displayed his basketball I.Q. by making simple plays and efficient passes that led his teammates to buckets. He has more of a wiry frame at this point, but his frame could certainly support added weight and muscle. AJ is a rebounding guard, using his length over smaller defenders, and quickness on taller defenders to secure rebounds. His lateral quickness must improve to guard two’s at the college level, and he must improve his ability to break defenders down to become more than a one dribble player.

2011 – Zuberi Floyd, 6’7, Forward, Hallandale High: Zuberi Floyd was the best rebounder at the Battle for the Rankings camp. Zuberi is an under the radar big man with a lot of upside. Floyd showed off his solid athleticism with a few dunks, and did a great job of running the floor for easy buckets. Zuberi even showed off some leadershi cheering his teammates on from the bench, and always being positive. Floyd has very fundamental moves in the post, with the ability to score in bunches. He really has a knack for rebounding the ball, and a habit for always being around the basket in a position to come up with the rebound. Floyd, a JUCO prospect, certainly has the ability to be a division 1 steal in the future. The key word with Zuberi is potential, and he certainly has a lot of it. We look forward to seeing his certain success in the future.

2011 – Dante Holmes, 6’4 Guard, Oldsmar Christian: Holmes, a former Marshall commit, was one of the top scoring wings this weekend. Dante showed the ability to score in bunches, hitting jump shots and getting to the rim at will. Holmes showed an improved handle and an improving jump shot this weekend. Dante is known for being a lock down defender, and he always gives a great effort on the defensive end. Holmes must improve his passing ability and basketball I.Q. before getting to the college ranks.

2013 – Rashawn Powell, 6’1 Point Guard, Dr. Phillips: Powell shows a very mature game at the point for only being a sophomore. Powell is a backup point guard for stud Shane Larkin this year, but look for him to certainly take over the job next year and do a great job. Rashawn has a spectacular handle, especially against pressure, and showed extreme poise running his team this weekend. Powell has a very quick pull up jumper and a quick first step, keeping his defenders always on their heels. He is a terrific prospect at this point, but must add strength as he matures to be able to guard the stronger point guards.

2012 – Joe Toolie, 6’4 Point Guard, Leesburg: Toolie is a heady point guard with a good handle at his height. Joe makes the right basketball play more often than not, often times setting up his teammates for scores. Toolie does not shoot the ball extremely well at this point, but showed the proper mechanics and the definite ability to knock down shots. Joe is most effective in transition making aggressive moves and well placed passes to his teammates for easy layups. Toolie lacks strength right now, but with the addition of added weight, Joe could turn into a steal for a college team.

2012 – DeVon Walker, 6’5 Wing, Winter Haven High: Walker is an explosive athlete that can throw it down with both hands. DeVon wowed the crowd with a rim rocking left handed dunk thrown down over his opponents. Walker showed the ability to knock down shots from any spot on the floor, including the three and mid range jump shots, and the ability to get all the way to the rim and finish. DeVon is also a tremendous passer and ball handler, which makes him a possible point guard prospect. His unselfishness really showed this weekend, when he showed no problem pitching it ahead on the break to his teammates. Not only is Walker a great athlete, but he is very long, which helps him defend multiple positions and altar shots. Walker needs to be more consistent with his jump shot and add some size with strength, but if he could do that, look out for this guy to be a mid major schools dream.

2011 – Quevyn Winters, 6’6 WG, Oldsmar Christian: Quevyn really impressed this weekend with his ability to pass the ball in transition, threading the needle with cross court bounce passes to teammates for scores. Winters knocked down a good amount of shots from behind the arc, but often settled instead of beating his man off the dribble. Quevyn has a great feel for the game, and he often times earns the hockey assist. Winters snatched a large amount of rebounds and showed off his tight handle with the ability to start the break. Quevyn needs to add foot speed to improve his game, making it easy to blow by defenders.

2014 – Richard Lee, 6’3, Guard, Northeast High: Lee is a shot taker and a shot maker with any type of degree of difficulty. Richard attacked the rim extremely hard with athletic finishes through contact and showed tremendous range from deep, knocking down an ample amount of not only open threes, but tough, contested threes. Lee hit tough jump shot after tough jump shot, showing off his ability to just score the basketball. To be a complete player, Lee must show the effort he gives on offense and display it on the defensive end. As a freshman, Richard’s skill level and talent is scary, and only his work ethic will tell how good he will be in the future.

2013 – Ian Malone. 6’5 Forward, Montverde Academy: Malone has showed much improvement each time we have seen him play. He has shown the ability to step out to the three and knock down shots, as well as catch it in the post and make plays. Malone runs the floor well and plays with a lot of heart. Ian must improve the consistency of his jump shot and handle to be able to move out to the wing position, but with the amount of improvement we have seen this summer alone, watch for him to make the jump soon.

Great assesment on Herbert Graham. A few things though.. He’s 6′4 and he attends Parkway Academy… not North Miami Senior High. He transfered this year and is getting ready to suit up for the Panthers. He’s also going to be a McDonalds All-American Nominee and has several D1 schools show interest in him. He has to be the sleeper of the year in the state…
